Read and Tell (Book Review Series): Lean In By Sheryl Sandberg

This is my first time writing a book review here. I have always enjoyed reading but after I started college I could not find time for reading "for fun." If the books were not textbooks then I knew I was wasting precious time that could be used for studying, eating, hanging out with friends, or sleeping.

I found a solution. Books that are categorized as self-help, empowerment, and how-to are useful, right?

Well one book started my love for these empowerment books and it's called Lean in by Sheryl Sandberg.

First off, amazing. Before you read my review go order it, now! I am serious! Sheryl Sandberg is currently the chief operating officer at Facebook and has done countless of amazing things with her life (wikipedia her!). Her book is all about women achieving senior or high status leadership positions in their career. It gave me the confidence I needed, and the motivation I had lost. Here are the top themes that really stood out to me. There are parts of the book that did not relate to me, so do not think I skipped anything. May I remind you, I am a college student and only 19, there is a reason why the marriage section of the book did not apply to me. I also believe most of my readers are younger than me so I thought these would be most helpful in getting you excited about the book. 1. Speak up and sit at the table.
As women we do many things because we know society will punish us if we act against it but in order to make a change you have to speak up. You also have to make yourself a valuable asset to the company. As women we tend to shy away from literally joining a table full of senior men even though we were invited to the meeting just like every man there.

2. Don't look for praise. Ask & Demand it.
You believe you deserve a raise. Bring it up, don't wait for someone to notice it. Advocate for yourself.

3. Take risks & don't downplay your strengths.
The greatest leaders are usually the best learners. You will never be 100% knowledgeable or ready when you apply for a position.

4.Take criticism & ask for criticism.
Most people will not give you criticism because they are scared to hurt your feelings but criticism is important to help you develop your strengths and help you work on your weaknesses.

5.Mentor other women.
Help each other out!

6. Lean In
Whatever it is your doing lean in all the way. Put your best effort and don't hold back.


My rating system will consist of 5 stars, one being the worst and five being the best (maybe I can come up with something more creative later on. Any suggestions for my rating system?)
